Home Sweet Home
I just returned from an AMAZING vacation with my family!
One of the best things about the last couple of weeks was that I got to go to the land where my next book will take place! Such a rare treat! I got to explore and hear legends from the area’s natives. Walking in the villages, I could actually see my next female character; I could see her coming home after many years abroad and seeing the small village with new eyes. I wonder if she’d think it quaint, or stifling? I’m not sure yet; I’m still getting to know her.
One of the most unique opportunities I had while on vacation was the opportunity to talk to Dr. William Doonan, a professor of anthropology at Sacramento City College. He was a lecturer on our cruise, giving us presentations and insights into our ports. He was kind enough to spend time with Aaron and I, and allowed us to pick his brain about the local history. Usually I have to do all of my research; it was a rare treat to be able to talk to someone who’s actually studied the culture and history of the area I’m going to be writing about!
I believe I’ve mentioned this in a previous blog post, but in my next book I’ll be bringing the aliens back to Earth. I’m excited about the prospect of the story, but it creates its own complications. For instance, when I talk about a certain region, myths, and lore, there are readers who are going to be from that area. They will know what I’m talking about firsthand, and will know immediately if what I’m saying is incorrect.
The only thing I can say on the matter is that I’m going to be as accurate as possible. I will try my best to be true to the region I’m writing about, and will take as few liberties as I can. That’s the best that I can do!
