Breaks are GOOD things!

I know that you’re all hoping that I had some major break-though this past week or finished my novel… no such luck. These past 2 weeks I did the exact opposite- I took a break from writing.

I know that’s not what you want to hear, but it’s the truth. Between a trip to Rome and 2 kids’ birthdays within 6 days of each other, I knew that I needed to shut down my computer, put away the notes, and concentrate on my family; something that we all need to do every once in a while.

I have been an author for three and half years now, and I’ve noticed something- when I’m in the midst of writing a book, I find that I have a very hard time doing anything else. My mind is constantly drifting to my characters, scenes, and plots, during all hours of the day. Normally this isn’t too much of a problem, but when I begin to have a difficult time switching my thoughts to anything other than my story, that’s when I need to take a step back.

That’s what I’ve been doing for the past 2 weeks- taking a step back. This was a good choice for my family, but it also helps make my writing stronger. When I take a break then restart work on a story, I can look at it more objectively. I can see holes, inconsistencies, flaws that otherwise I wouldn’t catch. It makes my books stronger.

Breaks are a good thing! We all need them! Here are a few pictures of what I did with my time:

The mouth didn’t bite my hand off so that must mean that I haven’t been lying! Although my youngest looks a little too nervous 🙂
